Employers May Scan, Shred Returned Forms W-2

Allowance can increase data privacy, security

Employers can now fulfill their regulatory requirement to keep undeliverable Forms W-2, such as those that are returned in the mail, by scanning the IRS and employee copies (copies B and C) and shredding the originals, IRS Chief Counsel recently told APA. This is supported by Revenue Procedure 97-22, Guidance on Electronic Records.
