11Alive's Paul Ossmann looks back at our coverage of Atlanta's tornado from last Friday night in this blog.
It’s been a few days since the EF-2 tornado ripped through the downtown area. Still hard to believe the damage the 130 mph plus winds did to some of the most recognizable buildings in our city.
One thing is not so hard to believe. This was the one biggest, and soon to one of the costliest weather events to ever hit in the city of Atlanta.
Your emails and calls to me and the weather team have been much appreciated. Many of those emails telling us that 11Alive was the only station covering the tornado while it was on the ground.
In fact many of you were kind enough to document the timetable, showing that by the time the other stations had begun their Friday night coverage, the tornado had weakened and moved back into the clouds.
And then there was “that picture.”
Shane Durrance, after hearing our warnings, went to the roof of his apartment off Howell Mill Road and captured what he thought was only lightning and unusual clouds. What he captured was history. So far it's the only picture of the Friday night tornado that ripped through the city.
Emails to me about getting a picture of that image have been overwhelming. If you would like to view the soon to be famous tornado photo, visit Shane's website at www.atlantatornado.org. Many thanks to Shane for his picture, and for your support of our severe weather coverage.
Until the next storm, be safe!
